What is a side sewer and what does it do?: A side sewer, also know as a lateral sewer or private connection, carries wastewater from a home or building's sinks, toilet, and drains to the public sewer system usually located in the street.

1. What is a side sewer and what does it do?: A side sewer, also know as a lateral sewer or private connection, carries wastewater from a home or building's sinks, toilet, and drains to the public sewer system usually located in the street.

2. Who maintains the side sewer?: If you own your home or building, you own your side sewer. Maintenance of side sewers from the building to the to the public sewer main is the owners responsibility. The County is responsible for maintaining the sewer main, including the tees.

3. How do I know the condition of my side sewer: Find a plumber or sewer inspector who can run a video camera through your side sewer. This will tell you if you have any problems with your side sewer like blockages from roots or a broken pipe. It is good to know about these problems so you can prevent a sewer back-up in your home.
